BUILDING A POND

There are two very common ways of building a pond in your garden.First, there is the flexible liner option, where a rubber or plastic liner is used, preferably with a protective underlay. This is very versatile,in that you can choose the size, shape and depth of your required pond
The other most common method is to use a preformed, rigid pond. These can outlast liners,as they are extremely tough and durable. It is the preformed method that we shall look at first.
Left to right above:
1.This is the preformed pond that we have chosen. An ideal size and depth for most gardens.
2.Take the time to find the right location.Ensure that there are no pipes, drains or cables where you want to dig.
3.Our chosen location.Note that we have picked a spot where falling leaves will not be a problem.
4.Putting the pond in place before starting to dig can at least give you an idea how the finished product may look.

When digging out the hole for the preformed pond,we started with an approximate size and depth, regularly checking if it would fit. With the shelves and ledges,it is quite important to get the hole as close to the shape of the pond as possible, to enable it to be supported sufficiently, and stable when filled with water.

1.This is the hole almost ready to have the pond put in place.
2.When the pond is in place, constantly check that it is completely level.
3.When you are satisfied, you can then fully fill with water.
4.The finished pond.

The next stage was to add plants, pump and filter.
Left to right above:
1.We have added some rockery stones, and will be planting inbetween these.
2.Choosing a selection of marginal, and deeper water plants can create a well balanced pond.
3.Adding the pipework for the filter. Most of this can be hidden when the pond is finished, and plants become established.
4.All of the hard work has been well worth it.

A FEW WEEKS LATER.......

Just a few weeks later and things are already beginning to take shape. The Marsh Marigold(caltha palustris)-left,is well established and in flower, while the other plants are all doing well.We have even attracted some wildlife too!
A short time later and there`s quite a difference as the water plants become more established.
As we move towards the end of May,we now have fish in the pond, and the native wildlife is now a permanent fixture
Our huge thanks to Manda and Andy for the pictures.
